It’s a manhunt that has lasted a year, but a crack Tanzanian unit has finally arrested perhaps the most notorious elephant poacher in Tanzania.
Known as “Shetani”, which means “The Devil”, Boniface Matthew Mariango has reportedly managed over fifteen poaching syndicates across multiple African countries, supplying them with weapons, ammunitions and cars. One of these was the poaching network that was directly supplying Yang Fenglan (the “Queen of Ivory”) who was arrested earlier this month.
These recent high-profile arrests in Tanzania show just what is possible with good intelligence, and is hopefully a sign that the days of elephant poachers and ivory dealers acting with impunity are over.
